Bamboo Flooring

The benefits of bamboo flooring are that it is an eco-friendly type of building material. Bamboo grows fast and it does not tax the environment to use bamboo as a building material. A single hardwood tree can take upwards of 30 years to mature. Clear cutting hardwood trees hurt the environment and areas where there has been clear cutting face pollution and serious erosion. Bamboo is a renewable resource and some species have been rated as harder and more durable than maple. Bamboo costs less than other traditional hardwood floors. However as a consumer it is important that you avoid low-cost hardwood or bamboo flooring. The quality of the bamboo comes in age and grade. If you are looking to purchase a bamboo floor test the flooring to see if it scratches easily. Also check to see the age it was cut at; 5 years or higher gives bamboo enough time to mature. Finally choose between a vertical or horizontal grade. A horizontal grade bamboo product offers the most strength and durability.

Types of Bamboo Flooring

Vertical Grain bamboo flooring has a light color that resembles the more natural appearance of bamboo. It is not as durable as horizontal grade, however most types of vertical grain bamboo are rated as more durable than a maple hardwood floor.

Horizontal Grain or Flat Grain bamboo flooring offers a darker color and more durability. It goes through a pressure heating process and is not normally stained. Horizontal grain can be sanded and refinished without needing stains and can simply be coated with a polyurethane protective layer later.

Engineered bamboo floors provide DIY enthusiasts with an easy way to install their own hardwood floors. Some manufacturers are even using a resin to create the flooring that does not produce fumes that harm the environment.

What’s causing the small round holes in my lawn and garden?

Over the past month I’ve noticed small holes appearing in my lawn and garden. Each is about 10mm in diametre, goes straight down for about 30-40mm, and then makes a sharp curve. Therefore I don’t know, beyond the first straight bit, how long the holes are. The surface of the hole occasionally a small amount of “castings” but more usually is clear of any debris. It basically looks like a single prong of a pitchfork, or a bamboo stake, has pierced the soil. I’ve mentioned this to a few gardening friends and found they are also experiencing it, but no one knows what causes it. (I live in the Far North, NZ). Any ideas?

Sounds like you are experiencing the affects of the New Zealand “flatworm”. Yes, it is a killer worm that feeds on the more common earthworm. It lays in wait under pots, piles of wood etc, until a victim comes along. It attaches itself with its sticky slime and begins to dissolve and eat the earthworm. They are a real pest in NZ and have been accidentally introduced in the UK, Ireland, and Scotland where they are a hated problem. They devour 1 or 2 worms a week and can last up to a year without eating (when food source is low) until the earthworm populations in the garden re-establishes itself. The holes you are seeing are caused by these flatworms. They will hunt down earthworms by going into the earthworms tunnels if they cannot find them on the surface. This is why you and your friends see these holes in the ground that looks like pitchfork tines were inserted there. Here is a link with some info. Check it out. This might not be your culprit, but I will let you decide that after reading the information…Hope this helps

Added Info: This site says that the flatworm is only found on the cooler southern island of NZ. Maybe you are finding a new outbreak! If you don’t live on the south island of course.
